I have to admit, when I was pregnant I didn’t really think I would buy many custom onesies. Stories of spit up and worse made me think there wasn’t much point. But since Julian was born, dressing him in a onesie that I love to look at is a something I completely understand. There was no way I could resist this one (plus it bears striking resemblance to Clemintine’s grand opening invite):

Clementine carried this one, a grey on grey bike onesie, that has been one of my favorites since day one. I gave it to my husband soon after finding out we were pregnant and I admit, there’s something that’s a little bit like magic when you see your wee person fit into something that you bought when he was just imagined.

In real life, they do mess them up. You put them on and an hour later they may be a whole bike-full of wetness. But, I’ve also discovered that onesies may say 3, 6 or 9 months, but you can generally have your baby wear them even if they’re a little long. Thus, extending their life and making the little splurge completely justified…

I’m a dedicated, but sporadic journaler. I go through phases of filling up journal upon journal - not with personal writing as much as snips and moments; ideas and images. Fabric, ribbon, sketches, brief words, ideas, found images, pieces of poems, smushed flowers and four leaf clovers. They are places for collection and worthy friends. When baby Julian was in-utero I wanted to make two things: a quilt (with scraps of fabric gathered from friends and family) and a journal. I’ve gathered the fabric thanks to wonderful friends at my baby shower and I found the perfect Journal: Rag & Bone’s blank circus book. Pictured here.

I met Rag & Bone at the NYC International Gift Fair in January and was immediately drawn to their wonderful assortment of blank books, photo albums, recipe guides and more. Plus, they hand bind their books in Pawtucket, RI (a process I admire, in a city my family grew up in!) I ordered a bushel of their products and customers loved them. I had a favorite print, but then they came out with this Circus pattern and I fell in love: the images and colors were perfect, especially for a mom-to-be of a baby boy who wanted desperately to avoid the well-worn aesthetic of footballs and trucks.

I’m not much of a baby-book person, so I chose their blank album. It is artfully bound with orange ribbon and creamy deckled edge pages. I used it for color inspiration for his nursery and looked at it lovingly from week to week before he was born. Then he was born and shockingly, there it sits. Totally empty. Because, it turns out, the last seven weeks haven’t afforded quiet moments to sit and reflect on my babe. Thankfully, because I get to spend a lot of time just being with him.

Luckily, I have a new plan. Among my daily online reading  this morning, I saw OhLife. They send you a daily email asking what’s going on, you reply. Somehow, I can find a few moments a day to quickly type what we did or new things. I have my instagram photos and so someday (maybe when he’s 5?) I’ll have time to make that quilt and fill his journal with the snippits of his days that I’ve been recording.

Ready for Spooktacular!
Earlier today Middlebury hosted the annual Spooktacular festival with activities for kids throughout town. This culminates in a spectacular kid-parade throughout town with all of the local businesses handing out candy. Julian dressed in his bunny suit and helped (ie. slept) me hand out candy. Here we are stocking up (and it still wasn’t enough!).
Happy Halloween!
p.s. Is it snowing where you are? Reports of many inches to our south!

Coming to you live today from downtown Middlebury from the Clementinestore. (Taken with Instagram at Clementine)
Julian was a bit board today, so we hopped up into the cozy chair in the window and watched the cars and people going by for a good 20 minutes. It was perfectly entertaining for him and so much fun when people stopped to wave.
I was alone in the shop on Friday, and so, was able to take down the Christmas window and replace it with some of our fabulous new baby things including: little girl aprons from Yellow Bird, kid rolling pins from VT Rolling pin, Aden & Anais swaddles and bibs, Shanna Murray Illustrated decals, Vital Industries bike onesies, All Wild Red Riding Hood and fawn print onesies, May Day Studios “Oh Darling” print, Separelli felted donuts, Jelly Cat stuffed animals and Aliette animal prints.
We’re so in love with our kid items right now and, if I can get Julian’s nap schedule on track, my goal is to start an online shop for Clementine with a selection of our favorite things for far away friends!

Sam has cleaned, tuned and fixed up the three typewriters we have in store. Now I’m thinking of having a typewriter event…do you have one in need of fixing or have you always hoped to own one? The planning begins (meanwhile, Julian learns his margins) (Taken with instagram)

Lila is a local momma who makes a great line of baby clothes and kitchenwares. The bright colors and patterns of her kitchen line* are enticing and she chooses the best illustrations and animal designs to adorn her onesies and toddler Ts. I came home from a visit this January and photographed a few which are now up on www.clementinestore.com. Have a peek! Here is Julian in his scooter onesie a few weeks ago. Lila both afixes the swatches of fabric and sews them so they are bonded well to the onesie. This one has been through the wash several times and is still in great condition. She also chooses onesies and toddler T’s with soft, generous fabric, so your little one will get months of comfortable wear from them.

*more on her kitchen line soon, we’re almost completely sold out now!

While visiting Angela at Carta, she reminded me that the Gardner Museum would be a wonderful trip. We only had an hour before it closed, but we hopped it on over there and had a wonderful visit.
There is no photography in the museum, so here is Julian, sitting in the library of the new wing. It’s a truly lovely space. (Taken with Instagram at Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum)

Just got the new Aden & Anais crib sheets in. They are amazingly soft and I couldn’t resist the sweet flying dog design. I put them on Julian’s mattress last night and loved how soft they are, the muslin is really wonderful.
We have most designs now in stock in store and online here. (Taken with Instagram at Clementine)  @adenandanais
